I live right outside of Portland, Oregon where the allergies are usually pretty bad! I walk around hearing people sneezing and coughing all day long. If you suffer from allergies, there are some easy things that you can do to help relieve your symptoms. First of all, start drinking yerba mate tea because it’s been shown to relieve allergic symptoms. You can find a great variety of these types of tea on Stash Tea’s website. If you suffer from ragweed allergies, stay clear of melons, bananas, chamomile tea, and sunflower seeds. Avoid foods that produce mucus in the body like dairy products, wheat, and food additives. Some foods that have been shown to help relieve allergy symptoms include apples, berries, onions, cabbage, and tea.
It’s Spring, hooray! The flowers are out in full-bloom and the trees are exploding with buds. It’s beautiful! For some of us, this means lots of sniffing and sneezing due to allergies. If you are one of the millions who suffer from allergies, be sure to include plenty of foods in your diet that are rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, and leafy green vegetables). “Good fats” from foods like fish and avocados naturally reduce the inflammation that accompanies an allergic reaction. Foods high in bioflavonoids are great for helping curb the symptoms of allergies and include green peppers, blueberries, grapes, oranges and cherries. To avoid any further allergic reactions from chemicals, try to buy all organic foods. Avoid pre-packaged foods full of chemicals, preservatives, and colorings.
If you are like me and experience asthma from time to time, you know how frustrating (and sometimes scary) an asthma attack can be. Studies show that people who eat foods rich in vitamin E, A, beta-carotene, and selenium have much lower rates of asthma. Try incorporating foods like walnuts, sweet potatoes, carrots, and dark leafy green vegetables into your diet. Omega-3’s are also important for asthma sufferers. Include plenty of flax seeds, chia seeds, Brussels sprouts, nuts, and tuna. Stay hydrated during the day (keeping your air passageways moist) by drinking lots of good quality water.
Many people suffer from food allergies. The most common types of foods include dairy, wheat, corn, yeast, caffeine, and citrus fruits. Fortunately, there are some foods that are helpful in reducing allergic reactions. Be sure to include plenty of antioxidant rich foods in your diet, like berries, almonds, chia seeds, etc. Yogurt, kefir, and cultured foods are good for replenishing helpful bacteria to promote gut health, which aids in soothing reactions to certain foods. Studies have shown that vitamin C can help reduce the symptoms of allergic reactions. Broccoli, parsley, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale are good sources of this vitamin. I also suggest taking a digestive supplement to help break down your food and aid in the digestive process.
Tis the season for sun (at least we hope so here in the Pacific Northwest). This means we get to spend a lot more time outside, playing in nature. That also means we can be more likely to bump into a poison ivy or poison oak plant. These plants are probably one of the most common allergenic plants in the USA. They are common along roadsides, forests, pastures, streams, and even in some backyards. The first symptom of poison ivy is a burning and itching sensation. This is followed by the development of a rash that is often accompanied by swelling, oozing, and blistering. Light weight fabrics do not provide adequate protection against poison ivy or poison oak because the sap can easily penetrate them. If you come into contact with one of these plants, aloe vera gel helps to relieve the burning and itching and tea tree oil helps to disinfect and heal the rash. A strong tea made of equal parts lime water and white oak bark is very good for poison ivy and poison oak. Apply a compress wet with this solution. Witch hazel helps to stop the itching and aids in healing.
